19 December is the Fourth and Final Sunday in Advent. Advent looks forward to Christ’s coming to us. During Advent we prepare to celebrate Christ’s coming to us in Bethlehem at Christmas time and also His presence with us today and His promised coming to take us to our eternal home.

The Old Testament Lesson highlights Bethlehem, the birthplace of our Savior. The Holy Gospel tells of Mary and her kinswoman Elizabeth marveling over the gift of our Savior and praising God in the words of the Magnificat. Pr Paul Graff will preach and lead us in worship this Sunday.

We have prisoners for Christ in both the Epistle Lesson and the Holy Gospel this Sunday. St Paul is writing to the Philippians from prison, and John the Baptizer is asking questions from prison about Jesus. And yet, the theme for the Sunday is "Rejoice!" St Paul rejoices to be connected to the Philippian Christians through Christ. Pr Bachman's sermon this Sunday will follow up on St Paul's advice to "Rejoice Reasonably, the Lord is at Hand."

John the Baptizer speaks to us from Luke 3 as we prepare for the Coming of Christ during Advent. Uncareful hearers experience only fire and brimstone in John's preaching, but Luke, in the inspired Gospel, calls John's preaching "Good News." This Sunday Pr Bachman will lead us in encountering "Good News in Fiery Repentance."

We are nearing the end of the Church's Year. Next week is the last Sunday. November 28 marks the beginning of a new Church Year with the First Sunday in Advent.

This Sunday we observe All Saints' Day. We remember friends and loved ones who have died, and with whom we continue to have fellowship in the Body of Christ.

The Gospel for All Saints' Day is the Beatitudes from Matthew 5:1-12.  The Epistle, from 1 John 3:1-3 wonderfully proclaims us all to be children of God. Pr Pierson's Sermon on this text is titled "Father, I'll Be Just Like You."

When Martin Luther began the Reformation in 1517, he soon discovered that being a Reformer was life threatening. In 1520, his own Prince who supported him, had Luther "arrested" and confined to the Wartburg Castle in order to protect him from religious authorities who planned to burn him at the stake. Our lives do not usually have such dramatic threats, but we too need to find refuge. Psalm 46 inspired Luther's hymn, "A Mighty Fortress" that proclaims God to be our refuge and strength. Sunday, Pr Pierson's sermon will use Psalm 46 on how "God is Our Refuge."

At noon we will celebrate the Reformation and our life together with an Oktoberfest German Potluck. All are welcome.

In Thursday Bible Study we were just reading Isaiah 35:5-6: "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy." In this Sunday's Holy Gospel Jesus restores sight to blind Bartimaeus. Pr Pierson will reflect with us on the topic "Can I See?"
