March 20, 2022 The Third Sunday in Lent

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word, Holy Communion, and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Fifty years ago American people were still intrigued by God’s Word even though our culture was rapidly drifting away from Christ and His Church. In the early 1970s two “Rock Operas” about Jesus were popular—“Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Godspell.” Both stubbornly ignored Jesus’ divine claim on the world and on each of us as the only Son of God.

Yet, when some of the songs made accurate use of God’s own Word, they did a service reminding us of God’s claim on us. Godspell had a song that began “Turn back O man! forswear thy foolish ways!” This is not far off God’s Word through the Prophet Ezekiel in our Old Testament Lesson: “Turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 33:11).

In this Sunday’s Holy Gospel Jesus twice in five short verses warns us—“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3&5). The Epistle Lesson sounds a similar note of warning. “Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).

How good, then, that God’s Service for us on Sundays begins with Confession and the immediate Forgiveness of Sins in Holy Absolution. God’s warnings are real, but so is His overwhelming love for us shown in the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus.

Fellowship will follow the Service as usual, and at 10:30am we’ll be continuing our study of what God's Word says about Satan. Bible Study will be available on the same Zoom link as used for Worship. The Sunday Bible Study Guide has been posted with the Service Folder. You can access this Sunday’s resources directly at this link.

May God make it possible for you to join us in person or on Zoom at 9am this Sunday for hearing God's Word and offering prayer, praise, and thanksgiving to God.

If you cannot be among God's people in person this Sunday, you can join us by Zoom.

To join Zoom by computer, go to our home page. On the home page, to the right of the photo slideshow, click on “Sunday Worship” and you will be taken directly to the Zoom link.

Mt Calvary Congregation officially Called Pr Robert Stevens of Arizona to be our next full time Pastor. Pr Stevens is announcing our Call to his current congregation this Sunday. We pray for him, for his current Congregation, and for our Congregation that God’s Will be done. Because of Pr Stevens’ commitment to focusing his current Congregation on Lent, Holy Week, and Easter Day (17 April), we will not likely hear any decision from him until after 17 April.

Lenten Midweek Services continue this Wednesday, 23 March at 6pm. A light supper will be provided by our Hospitality Committee between 5 and 5:15pm. More details will come by email on Tuesday or Wednesday, including Zoom information for whose who choose to worship from home.

March 13, 2022 The Second Sunday in Lent

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

The Lessons for the Second Sunday in Lent speak of enemies of God’s Word and their threats against God’s Prophets and His Son Jesus. In the Old Testament Lesson, the prophet Jeremiah is threatened with death (Jeremiah 26:8). In the Holy Gospel Jesus laments over Jerusalem “the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!” (Luke 13:34). In the Epistle St Paul speaks of “many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, who walk as enemies of the cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18).

Our task will be to explore God’s plan, despite His enemies, to bring all to say “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Luke 13:35).

Fellowship will follow the Service as usual, and at 10:30 we’ll be continuing our study of what God's Word says about Satan. Bible Study will be available on the same Zoom link as used for Worship. The Sunday Bible Study Guide will be posted with the Service Folder.

If you cannot be among God's people in person this Sunday, you can join us by Zoom.

Our Call Committee has mailed all members bios of candidates to be considered for a Call as our full time Pastor. A congregational meeting will be held this Sunday, 13 March, at 2pm. The sole agenda item will be to decide together on a Pastor to call into our Fellowship and Mission.

Lenten Midweek Services continue this Wednesday, 16 March at 6pm. A light supper will be provided by our Hospitality Committee at 5:15 pm. More details will come in another email on Tuesday, including Zoom information for whose who choose to worship from home.

March 9, 2022 Midweek Lenten Service

Our Elders have decided we shouldn't hazard having people get out into the weather to come to the Church for Midweek Lenten Service.

The Service will be held by Zoom at 6pm, and people can log in in the usual way.

The Service Folder is available at this Link

To join Zoom by computer, go to our website. On the website, to the right of the photo slideshow, click on “Sunday Worship” and you will be taken directly to the Zoom link for this Wednesday evening service.

To join Zoom by phone, call (720) 707-2699. When prompted, enter this number: 581 701 506 ## (including the two pound signs at the end).

This seems the wisest course for our congregation in this weather system.

Our Service of Lessons and Prayers focuses on St Luke’s portraits of people who looked forward in hope to the coming of the Christ, the Messiah.

I pray that you can join with us this evening by Zoom.

Cordially, in Christ,

Pr Jim Bachman

Resident Transition Pastor

March 6, 2022 The First Sunday in Lent

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word, Holy Communion, and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

The First Sunday in Lent is focused on Satan’s attempts to overthrow God’s Work in Christ. St Luke’s Gospel gives us an occasion to reflect on Christ’s use of Scripture against Satan, and Satan’s belated attempt to twist Holy Scripture to demonic purposes. We can take lessons for our own use of God’s Word against the wiles of the Devil.

Fellowship will follow the Service as usual, and at 10:30 we’ll be starting up some new study of Scripture, because we’ve finished our study of the Book of Isaiah. Bible Study will be available on the same Zoom link as used for Worship. A Sunday Bible Study Guide may be posted with the Service Folder but may not depending on what we study.

If you cannot be among God's people in person this Sunday, you can join us by Zoom.

To join Zoom by computer, go to our home page. On the home page, to the right of the photo slideshow, click on “Sunday Worship” and you will be taken directly to the Zoom link.

February 27, 2022 The Last Sunday after Epiphany

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word, Holy Communion, and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

The final Sunday of the Epiphany Season is focused on The Transfiguration of our Lord. St Luke’s report of the Transfiguration has special information telling us that Jesus, joined by Moses and Elijah, discusses with them His coming “exodus” to be accomplished at Jerusalem. “Exodus” is a Greek word meaning a “going out” or “departure.”

Both Moses and Elijah each experienced an extraordinary “exodus” from this world to the next, and so did Jesus. We will examine the necessity and significance of “exodus” from this world, including the extraordinary beginning each of us has already made for our “exodus” from this world.

Our Sermon Hymn guides us:

“Death, you cannot end my gladness: I am baptized into Christ!

When I die, I leave all sadness To inherit paradise!

Though I lie in dust and ashes, Faith’s assurance brightly flashes:

Baptism has the strength divine To make life immortal mine” (LSB #594).

Fellowship will follow the Service as usual, and at 10:30 we’ll be wrapping up our study of Isaiah 40-55. Bible Study will be available on the same Zoom link as used for Worship. The Sunday Bible Study Guide is posted with the Service Folder and can be accessed at this link or through the Worship tab on our website.

If you cannot be among God's people in person this Sunday, you can join us by Zoom.

To join Zoom by computer, go to our home page. On the home page, to the right of the photo slideshow, click on “Sunday Worship” and you will be taken directly to the Zoom link.

When completed and received, the Zoom recording of the Worship Service and the Sermon Manuscript for 20 February will be posted also under the link for the Service Folder.

Our Call Committee has mailed all members bios of candidates to be considered for a Call as our full time Pastor. A congregational meeting is planned for Sunday, 13 March, at 2pm. The sole agenda item will be to decide together on a Pastor to call into our Fellowship and Mission.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday Worship on 2 March at 6pm. A light supper will be provided by our Hospitality Committee at 5:15 pm. More details will come in this Worship Tab on Tuesday, including Zoom information for whose who choose to worship from home.

February 20, 2022 The 7th Sunday after Epiphany

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word, Holy Communion, and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

During this Season of Epiphany we have focused our attention on the unique Love that comes from God and is ours to share, even in this fallen world.

On this 7th Sunday after the Epiphany God’s Word takes us even more deeply into His Love and the Love that is ours to share. In the Gospel for this Sunday Jesus instructs us: “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. . . . for your heavenly Father is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:27-28, 35-36).

So we are led to confess with our Sermon Hymn that

“We fled God and in Losing God we lost each other too. Each singly sought and claimed his own, each man his brother slew. But Thy strong Love, it sought us still and sent Thine only Son That we might hear His Shepherd’s voice and, hearing Him, be one” (LSB #569).

Fellowship will follow the Service as usual, and at 10:30 we’ll continue our study of Isaiah 40-55. Bible Study will be available on the same Zoom link as used for Worship. The Sunday Bible Study Guide is posted with the Service Folder and can be accessed at this link or through the Worship tab on our website.

Many thanks to our Hospitality Committee for arranging our joyful Valentine’s Bingo Event last Sunday in our Christian Family Center. Many attended, great prizes were shared, and more than 1/4th of those present were invited guests.

More good news: Our Call Committee has mailed all members bios of candidates to be considered for a Call as our full time Pastor. A congregational meeting is planned for Sunday, 13 March, at 2pm. The sole agenda item will be to decide together on a Pastor to call into our Fellowship and Mission.

February 13, 2022 The 6th Sunday after Epiphany

God strengthens us Sunday by Sunday with His Word and the Means of Grace, including the Preaching of His Word, and the Fellowship of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

During this Season of Epiphany we have been hearing Epistle Lessons from 1 Corinthians that have focused our attention on our Life together in the Body of Christ.

On this 6th Sunday after the Epiphany we have occasion to consider the “Tie that Binds our Hearts in Christian Love” (LSB Hymn #649). Our Women’s Choir will sing the Hymn, and Colossians 3:14 is the Scriptural basis for the Hymn text: “14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

So we are led to reflect this Sunday on how Love is the Tie and how our being Bound by Love brings free and joyous Life. 1 Corinthians 15 will guide us along with Colossians 3:14. And yes, we have the extra connection with there having actually been at least one St Valentine in the Christian Church, and for more than a thousand years he’s been remembered on 14 February.

This Sunday afternoon at 2 pm is our Valentine’s Bingo Event in our Christian Family Center. Our Hospitality Committee says, “If you are able, please bring a snack to share. Drinks will be provided. There will be prizes for winning and door prizes for those bringing a friend (or 2). ‘Come & See’ how fun it will be!”May God make it possible for you to join us in person or on Zoom at 9am this Sunday for hearing God's Word and offering prayer, praise, and thanksgiving to God.
